performance indicator
Key performance indicators (KPI) are quantifiable criteria against which public bodies are judged. They help an organisation define and measure progress towards desired goals and provide a standard against which outcomes can be assessed. They enable comparisons to be made between the staff in one institution and the staff in a comparable one elsewhere. The British Broadcasting Corporation’s Environment Unit has developed 12 headline performance indicators via which action priorities within the Corporation can be established and measured. Local councils are measured against a set of Best Value indicators, the results of which may be published in league tables. Such measurements enable government ministers and organisational leaders to determine the strengths and weaknesses within any public body.
